#17 “Freezer Bags”

The Entitlement!

When you’re young and broke but still have Big Dreams of getting around in the world, a certain type of personality learns all sorts of little life hacks to get by.

For instance, if you go to a coffee shop just before closing, (and ask nicely), you can sometimes get a free cup of joe; they’re going to dump the rest anyway.

The Day Old doughnuts will sometimes get put in a big bag at 2:00 AM and be sold for a couple bucks to hungry urchins wandering the streets at night. (Stale sweet breads and luke-warm coffee? Ahhhh. I have fond memories of being a broke teen.)

And those big FedEx shipping boxes were great for storing artwork and mailing sample pages to prospective editors. But what struggling artist can pay afford FedEx prices? -So you order a bunch of supplies directly from their toll free number, but instead use them at the post office, (which at the time, mailed for a fraction of the price.) Mind you, I do remember feeling a bit guilty when fibbing to the FedEx agent, knowing full well I wasn’t going to be using their supplies as intended.

All of that is basic young person stuff. But then.., you grow up.

Or, you’re supposed to, anyway, or risk becoming the dude in this strip. What was somewhat excusable at 15 isn’t so very much at 30…
